Hello Friends,
One of the eminent highlights of my career that I’ve been commended on is my passion and unwavering efforts to participate in and win the most reputed awards related to my industry and field of expertise. Do you know why this is important?
Most professionals spend their career life working very hard to ensure they can keep their jobs. Some of them even do greater jobs to improve the business outcomes and deliver the desired results they are supposed to. The main question is: What’s next? What complimentary extra step you need to take to ensure your valuable contributions and accomplishments are noticed and recognized?
One great way from my experience is to participate in relevant industry and field awards. This is a readily available and accessible medium that most professionals can take advantage of should they want to help themselves get recognized and thus boost their professional credibility.
Recognition is one of the existing human needs that makes us feel good and valued, and as an experienced professional, you should know how to fulfil this need by being proactive rather than waiting for your manager, colleagues, or organization to notice your amazing work and acknowledge it.
The paradox here is that even-though most people would love their efforts to be appreciated, a lot of them either don’t know how to go about that or lack the courage to show up and be seen and highlighted. In Chapter 10 of my career guidebook Beat The Odds titled “Snatch The Spotlight” I’ve spoken extensively about this phenomena based on my personal observations during my tenure in the corporate world.
In my opinion, every one of us possesses unique talents, strengths, and way of thinking, and can contribute in a great way, and that contribution shouldn’t be left unspoken about. We should celebrate this uniqueness to highlight individual and team efforts and increase the likelihood of more such success stories to occur in the future.
If you have been waiting for years for your efforts to be noticed and to receive the recognition you deserve, then take a courageous step now and find out about the reputable awards and accolades popular in your industry and field of work. Don’t waste more time until you get lucky enough to be noticed in your own organization and be considered for one of those internal award schemes, because that just might not happen.
And once you leave the organization or retire one day, you need to have some tangible testimonies or symbols of your excellence i.e., trophies or awards that you can keep and be proud of when you remember your career journey and what you’ve achieved back then. Further, you will be able to show your children and grandchildren these souvenirs and tell them your stories of dedication, commitment, and excellence to inspire them.
To conclude, the old mindset of a “powerless employee” need to change now, because the new world of work demands more courageous, innovative, and self-empowering approach and solutions. Be the one designing then driving your career success story and stop expecting much in terms of reward, recognition, or professional development from your employer. Don’t shy away to take the required steps necessary to highlight your efforts and make you seen in front of others. Strive to become an “asset” not a “liability” to yourself and your organization. Brene Brown has expressed this beautifully in her bestselling book Daring Greatly: “There is nothing more daring than showing up, putting ourselves out there and letting ourselves be seen.”
As I always say; the only thing that you must not waste is “Time” and if you are on purpose, you will be able to utilize your time in the best possible way most of the time. Ready to start taking the right steps today?
